the pet grooming industry is a
multi-million dollar world but do you
really know what's in the products that
you're using on your four-legged friends
with little regulation it's hard to know
one Lexington woman learned the hard way
the toll chemicals can have on your pets
tonight how her own cancer journey is
helping make the pet grooming industry
safer wait Toby wait wait okay these
pooches have it pretty good they're
human adores them and if you take one
look around Melissa Bolin's Lexington
home it's evident just how many dogs
have captured her heart over the years
they're just their companions and they
comfort and they just seem to know
exactly what to do and when to do it
Bailey Piper and Toby take up residence
with her now but it's this pup Henry
Clay that was really a wag above the
rest I'm there right away this he was
gonna be a special dog Bowlin got Henry
Clay she says at a time in her life when
she needed it most
years later the two would share a
similar journey and this furry friend
would ultimately change how she cared
for her dogs in the future he actually
got cancer first he got cancer when he
was eight years old and it was his vet
felt like caused by exposure to
environmental toxins Bolin's beloved dog
died sadly on the same day she was
diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer
during her long 22 months of treatment
Bolin was forced to keep germs in the
house to a minimum and people who are in
a warm up a little bit that meant more
baths for the dogs and in turn she saw
them bitching and scratching more and I
thought that I knew how to read labels
and I thought I picked you know good
products for them Bolin was turning more
organic and natural products in her own
life so I'm gonna dispel a myth she also
began to take a good hard look at what
she was using on the dogs and what she
learned was surprising there is ZERO
regulation in the pet grooming industry
there's a tiny bit in the food part of
it but with grooming products there's
literally none
so this occupational therapist by trade
organic shampoo loves water developed
her own products 4-legger is a line of
organic and natural pet shampoos and
products this was our very first product
that launched its the lemongrass and
aloe on the heels of putting breast
cancer behind her Bolin flying hit
Amazon in 2015 in its first six weeks it
sold in every state and six countries
that was the market test and the
verification for us to know that people
want the best that they can get for
their pets 4-legger is certified by the
National Organic Program and now has the
full USDA seal our dogs are just
subjected to whatever we choose to do or
allow in their lives and so as the
vision of for later began to emerge it
meant that we had to do something
different going forward her line of
products are now sold locally and
globally so millions of Bath's by now
I'm sure and so some dogs are happy
about that and some not so and that's
something to bark at each bath Bolin
hopes her products give pet parents
peace of mind that what they're doing
for their four-legged friend is safe
